  2. In a place where lots of people, children, and houses will welcome you, Biñan Public Cemetery is located at M. Mabanat st., Brgy. San Antonio, Biñan City, Laguna. Different stylish mausoleums can be seen before reaching the main gate. These uniquely designed architectures are owned by families known in Biñan. After that, the road will lead to the narrower part of the cemetery - which is the part that has the smaller and older mausoleums and apartment-type of graves.

Inside the main gate, higher and bigger apartment-type and lawn-type graves can be seen. These apartment types are divided into 8x5 boxed spaces, most of which are already occupied. Bone Vaults can also be found, which are basically smaller apartment-type graves. It is where people can transfer the older remains of their loved ones so that they can vacate a space to be used by others. Since the cemetery itself is old, it really is crucial to have vacant spaces.

Our Story

History

Biñan Public Cemetery is estimated to have been established in the 1900s, meaning that it has already been in use for at least 100 years. According to the residents living near the cemetery, the land where the cemetery resides was owned by Don Menong Gana’s family, who originally lived in Biñan’s municipality and named it Biñan Municipal Cemetery.

As time progressed, the number of graves continuously increased despite the fact that the structures and facilities hadn’t been changed. Because of this situation, the placement of the graves became unorganized, resulting in confusing paths that must help lead the visitors to their loved ones. To provide a solution, the cemetery built bone vaults that were helpful in terms of keeping the remains of those who had been buried for a long time. By implementing this, more spaces became vacant.

Other Info

In the middle of Biñan Public Cemetery, there used to be a chapel built for Sta. Filomena Almarinez. She was known to be the girl whose body didn’t decompose after being buried there for a long time. Some Biñan residents believed her to be miraculous, and so a number of them devoted themselves to praising Filomena Almarinez, now known as Sta. Filomena.

Filomena Almarinez was born on July 6, 1913, in the very same place where Biñan Public Cemetery resides—Brgy. San Antonio. Her parents are farmers, and she's been known as kind and loving ever since she was a kid. Unfortunately, at the age of 25, she passed away on August 13, 1938. Speculations were that it was because of severe emotional stress because her parents disapproved of her relationship with her then boyfriend.

After nine long years, her father passed away. Their family decided to dig up Filomena’s remains, expecting only bones to put them together with her father’s casket once buried. To their surprise, Filomena’s body is still there, fully intact and undecayed. Even her clothes were untouched and clean. Ever since then, they have believed that there is something meaningful as to why this has happened.

Meet Our
Team

Meet our hardworking team — they are graduating students from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines – Biñan Campus. They created Elysium: Geographic Information System as part of their course requirements. This project is inspired by the constant need of public institutions to improve their systematic processes. As cemeteries are wide, complex, and confusing, their team figured that it would be a big help to build a digital map that all stakeholders would benefit from. By building this project, they aim to help not only those who are in need to visit their loved ones but also to provide a functional and manageable system for the cemetery’s administrative office.
